Privacy Policy (boxes.dev)

Last updated: September 25, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Boxes, Inc. (or "boxes.dev," "we," "us," "our") collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you use our website, applications, and related services (collectively, the "Service").

boxes.dev provides developer tooling that provisions and manages remote Linux development machines ("Template boxes" and "Devboxes") and related features (for example, remote terminal sessions, service detection, session viewing, and optional push notifications).

1) Scope

This Policy applies to information we process when you:

  • visit our website (boxes.dev),
  • sign up for or use our web or mobile applications,
  • use our CLI and related local components, and
  • interact with us (for example, support).

This Policy does not cover third-party products and services that you choose to use in connection with the Service (for example, Google, Apple, OpenAI, Anthropic, or your code hosting provider), which are governed by their own privacy policies and terms.

2) Information We Collect

A. Information you provide

We collect information you provide directly, such as:

  • Account information. When you sign in via Google OAuth or Sign in with Apple, we receive basic profile information (such as name, email address, and profile photo, depending on what you authorize).
  • Allowlist information. If you are added to an allowlist, we collect your email address and related timestamps.
  • Communications. If you contact us, we collect the information you include in your message.

B. Information collected automatically

When you access the Service, we and our service providers may collect:

  • Device and usage data. Such as IP address, device identifiers, browser type, operating system, app/CLI version, and logs about how the Service is used.
  • Diagnostics and operational telemetry. For example, remote-machine heartbeat events, timestamps, and metadata needed to operate the Service, and event data related to active sessions and detected services (like port open/close events and basic protocol guesses such as HTTP/HTTPS).
  • Product analytics and session replay. We may collect navigation and interaction events and privacy-masked representations of application screens to diagnose usability problems, screen flicker, animation issues, errors, and performance. Native mobile replay is configured to mask standard text inputs before upload. Replays may include ordinary displayed text, layout, motion, interactions, and other visual elements.

C. Remote machine and project metadata

We process metadata required to create and manage remote machines and projects, such as:

  • machine identifiers, names, aliases, and timestamps,
  • project identifiers and timestamps,
  • optional repository metadata you provide (such as a repo URL or default branch/ref),
  • local project paths that may be recorded by the CLI (these can sometimes include username or machine path information).

D. Credentials and tokens

Depending on how you use the Service:

  • the CLI stores certain credentials locally on your device (for example, an infrastructure access token you provide),
  • we may store and use tokens needed to operate the Service on your behalf (for example, to authorize relay connections and manage remote machines),
  • if you upload SSH public keys, we store public keys only (not private keys),
  • mobile apps may store authentication tokens in your device's secure storage when available; web apps may use browser storage.

E. User content and agent/session content

The Service is designed so that most of your repositories, working files, and terminal logs primarily reside on your remote-machine filesystem (hosted by our infrastructure provider). However, certain content may be processed by the Service:

  • Session history streaming. If you use session viewing features, session history may be streamed on-demand from files on your remote machine to your client (for example, mobile/web) via our relay. The relay is designed as a pass-through and is not intended to persist the byte stream.
  • Small stored snippets for UX. For usability, we may store limited snippets associated with an agent session (for example, the first user message and first assistant message, truncated) and a short, generated one-line session title.

3) How We Use Information

We use information to:

  • Provide and operate the Service (authentication, provisioning remote machines, connecting clients, enabling session viewing, and delivering notifications you request).
  • Maintain safety, security, and integrity (prevent abuse, troubleshoot issues, monitor reliability, and enforce policies).
  • Improve the Service (debugging, performance analysis, and developing new features).
  • Communicate with you (service updates, administrative messages, and support).
  • Comply with legal obligations and protect our rights and users.

4) How We Disclose Information

A. Service providers and processors

We share information with vendors that help us operate the Service, such as:

  • Authentication providers: Google and Apple (for sign-in).
  • Backend infrastructure: Convex (authentication, database, and APIs).
  • Relay/proxy infrastructure: Cloudflare Workers (to proxy connections between clients and remote machines).
  • Push notifications: Expo Push Service (to deliver push notifications; we store push tokens and send notifications that may include short snippets and session identifiers for deep-linking).
  • AI processing for titles: OpenAI (to generate a short one-line session title from limited initial messages, as described above).
  • Remote-machine hosting provider: Our infrastructure provider (the platform that hosts and runs your remote machines and stores their files).
  • Analytics and diagnostics: Amplitude (product analytics and privacy-masked session replay) and Sentry (crash and error reporting).

These providers process information on our behalf subject to contractual confidentiality and security obligations.

B. Legal and protection

We may disclose information if we believe disclosure is reasonably necessary to:

  • comply with law or legal process,
  • respond to lawful requests,
  • protect the rights, safety, and security of boxes.dev, our users, or the public.

C. Business transfers

If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, due diligence, reorganization, bankruptcy, or sale of assets, information may be disclosed or transferred as part of that transaction.

D. With your direction

We disclose information when you instruct us to do so (for example, when you connect third-party tools or services).

5) Third-Party AI Tools You Run Inside Remote Machines

If you run third-party AI coding agents inside a remote machine (for example, Codex or Claude Code), those tools may send prompts, context, and outputs to their providers under their own terms and privacy policies. boxes.dev does not control how those third parties process that data.

Separately, boxes.dev may use OpenAI to generate short session titles as described in this Policy.

6) Cookies and Similar Technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies primarily to:

  • keep you signed in,
  • maintain session state,
  • operate and secure the Service.

We do not use cookies for cross-context behavioral advertising.

7) Data Retention

We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the Service and for legitimate business purposes, such as security, compliance, and dispute resolution. Retention depends on the type of data:

  • Account and operational records are generally retained while your account is active and as needed afterward for legal and security reasons.
  • Telemetry and logs are retained for debugging, security, and reliability purposes for limited periods or as reasonably necessary.
  • Session replay data is generally retained for up to 30 days for debugging and product reliability analysis.
  • Remote-machine file content primarily resides on the remote-machine filesystem and is retained according to machine lifecycle and your actions (for example, deletion of remote machines).

8) Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9) Your Choices and Rights

Account information

You may update certain account details through the Service or through your authentication provider. You can request deletion of your account by contacting us (see "Contact Us").

Push notifications

You can disable push notifications through your device settings. If you disable notifications, we may still send essential administrative messages through other channels (for example, email).

California privacy rights

If you are a California resident, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information we hold about you, and to receive information about our data practices. To exercise these rights, contact us at the email below. We may need to verify your identity.

Selling/sharing. We do not sell personal information. We also do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are defined under California law.

10) International Transfers

If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information may be processed in the United States and other locations where our service providers operate.

11) Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us so we can take appropriate action.

12) Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will take reasonable steps to notify you (for example, by posting an update on our website or within the Service). The "Last updated" date above reflects the effective date of the current version.
